YES...4 days in the beautiful island of Phuket, Thailand with a group of 10 colleagues. Traveled by Air Asia and they were some who took a 7 hours bus ride from Hatyai via Krabi but our flight only took 1 hour 25 minutes. I guess it was compulsory for them to stop in Hatyai and pick-up Thai translator there...

Our main hotel was the Tiger Hotel & Complex operated by the Tiger Group and this Group operate many hotels and entertainment outlet in Phuket. This hotel is located next to the Muay Thai Boxing stadium and if you are lucky you can watch Thai Boxing from your room window. It is also located next to a shopping mall Jung Ceylon where you can shop and eat at fine restaurant, something like the Curve at Bandar Utama.

Just a short walk from the hotel is the popular Bangla Road where all the go-go bars and open dancing happens there..from sunset to at least 3.00 am because that was when we decided we have seen enough. The road is blocked at both ends so there were no cars, motorcycles and tut-tut. By the way tut-tut is expensive here, charging THB 40 per person per ride even 400 meter ride. Well, can't complaint as Phuket is a tourist hot destinations!

There were plenty of Muslim food in Phuket at Thai Muslim restaurant at slightly more expensive than Malaysia price. There were also the usual Kebab and Beriani but they cost THB 399 per meal and if you come with a family of 6 it will cost you a bomb! There were the traditional Muslim restaurants and Muslim can eat there, pricing is acceptable!

Besides Bangla Road, the beach is where a lot of people go to especially in the late afternoon watching sunset, beautiful view while sipping your cold Coca-Cola...In your free time visit Laem Promtep on top of the hill and enjoy the scenery...in the afternoon go to the Premium Outlet and buy some branched clothes and other things at discounted prices..I bought some Golf Accessories at discounted price!

Many thanks to Ms Aida Banop of Tonsai Holidays and Tours for the arrangement!

Ready for telematch

Our office organized a company trip cum Family Day to Legend Resort Cherating Pahang. About 100 staff and families came to Cherating and stayed 2 nights at the Resort. Saturday was filled with 8 tele-match events and the afternoon was occupied with visit to Batik factory and the Turtle Sanctuary that culminated with release of 140 baby turtles to the sea. As the statistics showed that only 1 in 1000 baby turtles released would live to lay eggs, so I guess those 140 babies would not live very long..good luck to them.

As part of the usual annual trip to meet timber industry members we went to Kuantan Pahang and Kuala Terengganu by road. In Kuantan we stayed at the new Zenith Hotel opposite EC Mall and in Kuala Terengganu we stayed at the FELDA Residence Hotel which is the new addition in Kuala Terengganu. In Kuantan we visited 4 wood-based mills mainly to gather latest information on timber supply and prices. In Kuala Terengganu we visited 3 timber mills for the same purpose.

In the free time we checked out both towns days and nights..

When our office announced that staff could go to Kuala Sepetang, Taiping to participate in a tree planting event, there were lackluster interest because it would be on Sunday. For me there was no second thought, Taiping is my wife hometown and she does not mind planting a few mangrove trees there.

There were a few of us Raja Mahadi, Azmi, Lucas Low, Zahrin, Andrew, Siti and me brought along family members to make up the numbers. I led the convoy and directed them to Casavilla Hotel located at the Kuala Sepetang-Taiping junction. This was the only hotel available that could gave us 8 rooms, the other preferred hotels in Taiping were all fully booked. This was school holidays and our trip was not planned earlier.

Nevertheless on Sunday we were at the site early, a prepared site just a hundred meters from the Kuala Sepetang Forestry Office, the host for the event. Actually the tree planting event was the Perak Girl Guides activities and we were there to show support.

In the evening we went to Kuala Sepetang again but for other purpose, mee udang of course. We chose mee udang Mak Jah because it was shown on TV. There was struggle to get seat as there were many visitors but we got our tables after waiting for a while. The mee udang came and true to the folklore tales told by many, indeed there were many udang exposed and hidden and tangled with the mee. How was the taste? Well it was worth the trip and I am sure everybody slept happily that night...

It has been sometimes since I last visited Kuching, Sarawak when Holiday Inn was still there, now it is Grand Magaretha..no wonder you can't get it on the web anymore. Hotel Pullman is the new land mark, Government rate is RM 180++ but I stayed at Riverside Majestic where the rate was RM195++ for Government, being non-Government I had to pay RM260++, hotels are not cheap anymore even for old establishment.

The trip to Kuching was a business trip so I did not call many old friends in town. Nevertheless still managed to have late 3-layered tea at Station 1 the hottest hang-out in Kuching now where many teeenagers hanged out and both of us the looked out-of-place being older than most of the patrons. It is situated next door to Hotel Pullman. Me and Bob talked about our peers who will be retired this year and some next year. Both of us will retire from work a little bit later, Bob had decided to relocate to Nilai Spring Golf & Country Club Residence while I will be next door to Perangsang Templer Golf Club.

The subject of golf quickly came into the conversation and we discussed about equipment and how they affect distance and whether we should use steel or graphite shaft at this age. Well if we can still hit 6-iron to 160 metres, we are allright! My schoolmates Mazlan called to say hello and he just played golf at KGS with another schoolmate Roslan the day before, so many friendly golfers in Kuching, must bring my golf set on my next trip.

During my 2 days 1 night stay in Kuching, liked the trip across the river with Haslan my office colleague where we bought some kek lapis, err..the wet ones (Kueh Lapis basah!). Having teh tarik and looking at Kuching from across the river is something any visitors should do..very nice scene for photography. My host from Kuching took us for sightseeing around Kuching Utara and Selatan and later to Pasar Satok to buy the Terubuk Masin and Terubuk local..nice to eat with Nasi lemak.

Breakfast at the Hotel was followed by another breakfast near Pejabat Mara where we had Mee Kolok and Laksa Sarawak. Later we we went for Friday Prayer at the Masjid Lama and had rice with Oxtail soup before departing to Kuching Airport. This was really a `Makan' trip because last night we had dinner at the Permata seafood centre, the crabs, prawns, sabah vegetables, midin and the grilled Terubuk with eggs was fantastics.

Hope to come back soon to close the business deal in May 2011...
